LinkedIn as a Recruitment Strategy - Another Reason for Businesses to Get Social
|
I have talked before about the importance of social media such as Facebook & Twitter for businesses. Social media is now a vital tool to be used in any customer feedback and SEO strategy.
But, there are some new social media trends only just starting to show their face. Social media is rapidly becoming a core way to find great candidates, with LinkedIn leading the charge.
LinkedIn is the "serious" side of social media – designed primarily for businesses and business people to network, share ideas and do business. In recent times, LinkedIn dipped its toes into the recruitment market, and now generates about 43% of its profits from its job board. In other words, an awful lot of people now use LinkedIn to find their new employees.

Apply with LinkedIn App
But this week, there was a leak that LinkedIn is currently developing an app for businesses to use on their website job boards, where people could just click on the link and "Apply with LinkedIn", using their LinkedIn profiles as resumes.
The recruitment industry has been noticeably unimpressed, as it is suggested that this will eat into their business model.
To be honest, I have seen only extremely limited comment from the general HR community so far (as an industry group they tend not to be across new IT developments). But, the sort of comments I expect we will hear will be concern over the increase in generic applications they will have to screen, and concerns over whether people will pad their LinkedIn resumes, just to get through the screening process.
The question isn't whether it should be done – it is going to happen. The question should be how businesses should make the best use of it and deal with the inevitable downsides.
I suspect the early adopters of "Apply with LinkedIn" will get a front run of the best candidates (and the hidden candidates who may not frequent traditional job boards).
I also suspect that the businesses that will get the best results will be the businesses that use all of the "Apply with LinkedIn" features, such as asking additional screening questions rather than a simple click to apply.
So, if you are looking for new employees, or are looking for a new career, you may want to expand your search strategy beyond the sign in the window and general job boards, to exploring what LinkedIn has to offer.

| HR Tip of the Week: Linked in Tips for Job Seekers |

If you think you may ever use LinkedIn for your personal job search in the future, here are a few of my suggestions:
- Get on LinkedIn if you are not already on it.
- Polish your profile until it shines. This means reviewing all grammar, relevant information and career history. Seek additional recommendations from colleagues and businesses you have worked with to give credibility to your experience claims.
- Participate in answering questions others may ask on LinkedIn, in order to build your profile as an expert in your field.
Remember to Polish All Your Other Social Media
And one more thing, while the jury is still out about the legality of businesses searching the social media profiles (such as Facebook & Twitter) of candidates for their positions, it pays to remember that at the moment, many businesses still do it. So while you are polishing your LinkedIn profile, polish up your act on the other social media.
You may want to use one of the new free services on the market to go through your profiles for you, to work out what is ill advised or inappropriate and needs to be deleted (remembering that the net has a L-O-N-G memory, and determined people can still find out deleted material).
Two useful ones are http://www.reppler.com/ and http://socioclean.com/Default.aspx.
And if you have really stuffed up on the net, then you may need to look at one of the online reputation companies springing up, that use SEO to bury the bad material many pages down in the search engine returns.
